In this training, examine the role of diversity within your organisation and society and how to improve your diversity practice.

Learning outcomes 

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Understand what we mean by equality and diversity
  • Understand what the different protected characteristic groups are
  • Understand what equality and diversity mean in practice
  • Understand how diversity operates in organisations and in communities
  • Improve knowledge and understanding of the Equality Act 2010, discrimination, and reasonable adjustments
  • Understand how to improve equality and diversity
  • Reflect on how stereotyping works
  • Understand how and when to challenge inequality and discrimination

This interactive and participatory workshop will assist you to address equality and diversity issues/barriers for staff and service users.

This course can be delivered as a half-day or full-day course. Options for the full-day course include one of the following:

  • Working through a specific project or service you are developing
  • Short session on unconscious bias awareness
  • Short session on human rights principles and practice awareness
  • Specific session for managers on equality and diversity in management practices

In this training, understand who is covered (protected characteristic groups) and ensure compliance with regard to employment and customer service.

Learning objectives 

By the end the session participants will have increased understanding of:

  • Who is covered by the Act (protected characteristics)
  • What types of discrimination are unlawful
  • When positive action measures can be adopted
  • When is discrimination allowed (including occupational requirements)
  • What is meant by reasonable adjustments and when they apply
  • What are an employers’ or service providers’ responsibilities and liabilities
  • How the Equality Act 2010 can be put into practice

A section on the Public Sector Equality Duty and specific duties for Wales is added to this course for public sector organisations and organisations delivering services commissioned by or on behalf of public sector organisations.

The course is particularly relevant for individuals involved in recruiting or managing staff and those responsible for providing services, as well as for trade union representatives.

In this training, know when you need to change the way things are done, when to make changes to overcome barriers created by physical features of your organisation and when to provide extra equipment or provide assistance.

Learning outcomes 

By the end of the session participants will have:

  • Increased awareness of the legal duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled workers
  • Gained an understanding of the underpinning principles of the duty to make reasonable adjustments
  • Improved their understanding of the disadvantages and barriers faced by disabled staff (from all 5 impairment groups) and the potential solutions to overcome these   Identified who has a right to reasonable adjustments, when these are required and who has the responsibility for this
  • Have an understanding of what steps to take if an employer doesn’t know that the person is disabled and/or if the disabled person has not informed the employer of their impairment and its nature.
  • Increased understanding of the range of adjustments that can be made
  • Considered the consequences of failure to make reasonable adjustments at work

Developed an action plan that puts learning into practice

In this training, understand the barriers faced by disabled people and access solutions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course participants will:

  • Understand what the social model of disability is
  • Be able to put social model thinking into practice
  • Understand the legal definition of disability in the Equality Act 2010
  • Understand different impairment groups and considerations needed
  • Increase awareness of disability-related language and etiquette
  • Increase awareness of access and inclusion barriers and solutions

Plan actions to deliver improved access and inclusion in your own organisation

In this training, understand what unconscious bias is and how it impacts on employment, workplace practices, and service delivery.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session participants will;

  • Reflect on their own unconscious bias
  • Understand the definition of unconscious bias
  • Understand the common types of unconscious bias
  • Understand the range of workplace situations and practices affected by unconscious bias
  • Understand the impact of unconscious bias on their professional practice
  • Understand the impact of unconscious bias on colleagues; customers or service users; operational planning; and external stakeholders

Increase awareness of how to effectively mitigate and manage unconscious bias

In this training, learn how to carry out an EIA of your policies and programmes.

Learning outcomes 

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Understand who is covered by the Equality Act 2010 (protected characteristics)
  • Learn how to conduct an EIA and the issues that need to be taken into account
  • Recognise the potential risks of failure to conduct an EIA or of unfair decisions made based on an EIA
  • Identify the type of data and information you will need to conduct an EIA
  • Identify when an EIA should be conducted
  • Recognise the importance of involvement and consultation in this process
  • Explore potential uses of Integrated Impact Assessments
  • Explore links with the Well-being of Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015

We prefer to base interactive exercises in this course on your own EIA or integrated impact assessment policy, process and form.

This interactive course will support you to develop your understanding of gender identity, gender expression and trans and the issues faced by trans people as employees, customers, and members of the public.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand the difference between Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Biological Gender and Sexual Orientation
  • Understand why it is important to use appropriate and non-offensive terminology
  • Assess the impact of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination
  • Challenge common myths and misconceptions
  • Recognise and understand the legal rights of Transgender people in employment and as customers
  • Reduce and eliminate any fears or misunderstanding
  • Understand the ‘Transition Pathway’ and how the well-being and health of a Transgender person may be affected
  • Be aware of changes to policy and practice that may be needed in your own department and role.
  • Be able to implement changes to policy and practice that improve the experience of transgender employees and customers

Know where to go for further support

This course will explore people’s experiences and impacts of homophobia and biphobia and how organisations can become more inclusive of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Be able to define sexual orientation
  • Understand the range of terminology used by lesbian, gay and bisexual people
  • Understand why it’s important to use appropriate and non-offensive language
  • Assess the impacts of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination
  • Be able to challenge common myths and misconceptions about LGB people
  • Understand some of the common issues faced by LGB people in employment and service delivery
  • Be aware of changes to policy and practice that may be needed in your own department and role
  • Be able to implement policy and practice that improve the experience of LGB employees and customers

In this training, understand factors that shape culture, cultural differences in communication, family and gender and increase your confidence in day-to-day interactions with people from various backgrounds.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand factors that shape culture
  • Consider examples of cultural differences, such as, communication, family and gender
  • Develop confidence in dealing with cultural differences

An introduction to spotting the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems and how to promote positive mental health and well being.

Learning outcomes

The course will enable participants to gain a general understanding of:

  • Mental/ emotional distress and mental health
  • The nature and extent of stigma and discrimination
  • The signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, self-harm and psychotic disorders
  • Risk factors and rates of suicide
  • Pathways to recovery
