Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Cultural Competence Certification Scheme

How the Certification Scheme works
Our Certification Scheme is funded by the Welsh Government, independently validated by the United Kingdom Investor in Equality and Diversity (UKIED) and endorsed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Our scheme has two parts: cultural competency awareness training sessions and the completion of a self-assessment evidence workbook.
Join our Certification Scheme by registering your unit, department or whole organisation with us as a ‘workplace area’. For example, your workplace area may be a small third sector organisation, a CMHT, Forensic Unit, Ward, Administrative Area, Head Office, or HR Team etc.
Register online and pay a registration fee, which covers the cost of the entire certification process and includes free cultural competency awareness raising sessions for up to 24 participants, which can be either face-to- face or online.
Cultural competency awareness sessions
We run four modules, each based on information provision and interactive in-depth reflection:
1. Disparities
2. Culture
3. Unconscious Bias
4. Practical considerations to improve cultural competency practice.
Self-assessment evidence workbook
The completion of the self-assessment workbook is based on providing practical examples of cultural competency progress by the workplace across four assessment areas:
1. Environment and Management Commitment
2. Communication and Consultation
3. Cultural Competence understanding and Professional Development
4. Monitoring and Engagement
On assessment, your workplace will be awarded an attainment level of either gold, silver or bronze.
Support is tailored to individual workplace areas within organisations to ensure ownership and accountability. We will be available throughout the entire process to offer advice and guidance as you complete the self-assessment workbook.
Certificate of Attainment
You will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment following assessment.
You will be able to display a certificate stating that you’re progressing towards cultural competency in the workplace and demonstrating you’re committed to an ongoing workplace developmental process to continually improve your culturally competency practice, developing fairer services for all.
Certificate Presentation Celebration
In October 2021, Diverse Cymru was delighted to celebrate the progress of two of the Certification Scheme’s participants with the presentation of Certificates of Cultural Competence Progress to Public Health Wales – People and Organisational Development and to Caswell Clinic – Swansea Bay University Health Board.
At our inaugural online Certificate Presentation event, the First Minister of Wales, The Rt Hon Mark Drakeford, said,
“We as a government are proud to fund the Cultural Competence Certification Scheme because we recognise the importance of developing good practice to ensure that the services that organisations provide are fair and are equitable.”
Congratulating those receiving certificates and the Certification Scheme participants the First Minister said,
“You are helping us to deliver on our promise of a fairer and more equal future as we create an Anti-Racist Wales by 2030.”
The scheme is a part of helping to achieve the Welsh Government’s Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan, published June 2022.
